How to calculate a tip
To work out a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage. To split the bill, divide the total (bill plus tip) by the number of people. This calculator does both at once, so you get the tip, the full total, and the amount each person owes.
The formula
Tip = bill x (percent / 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total / number of people.
Worked example
On a 400 bill at 10%, the tip is 40, the total is 440, and split four ways that is 110 each.
How much should you tip?
Customs vary by country. In the United States 15 to 20% is standard for table service; across much of Europe a smaller tip or simply rounding up is normal; and in some countries tipping is not expected at all. Use the rate that fits where you are.
