How to calculate a discount
A discount is a percentage taken off the original price. To get the sale price, work out the discount amount and subtract it, or multiply the price by (1 minus the percent as a decimal). This calculator shows both the final price and how much you save in one step.
The discount formula
Sale price = original price x (1 - percent / 100). Amount saved = original price x percent / 100.
Worked example
A 250 item at 20% off: you save 250 x 0.20 = 50, so the sale price is 200.
Common questions
To find the percent off from two prices, divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100. If a 250 item now costs 200, that is 50 / 250 x 100 = 20% off. Two discounts applied one after another do not simply add up, so for stacked coupons use our double discount calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percent off?
Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. Saving 50 on a 250 item is 20% off.
Do two discounts add together?
No. 20% then 10% is not 30% off. Each applies to the reduced price, giving about 28% off. Use the double discount calculator for stacked coupons.
How do I add two discounts?
Apply the first discount, then run the result through the calculator again with the second discount. They multiply, not add.
Does it include tax?
No. Use the VAT calculator to add sales tax to the final price if needed.
Can the discount be over 100%?
No, a discount cannot exceed the price. The field is capped at 100%.
