How to calculate a test grade

Your test grade as a percentage is the number of points you scored divided by the total possible, times 100. This calculator turns your score into a percentage and a letter grade, so you can see at a glance how a test went. It works for any number of questions or points.

The formula

Percentage = (points earned / total points) x 100.

Worked example

Getting 18 out of 20 is 18 / 20 x 100 = 90%, which is usually an A.

Good to know

Letter-grade cutoffs vary by school. A common scale is 90+ A, 80s B, 70s C, 60s D, below 60 F. If your class weights sections differently, work out each section first, then combine.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my test score percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the total possible and multiply by 100. 18 out of 20 is 90%.

What letter grade is my score?

A common scale is 90+ A, 80 to 89 B, 70 to 79 C, 60 to 69 D, under 60 F, but cutoffs vary by school.

What grade scale does it use?

The common 90/80/70/60 scale for A/B/C/D. Use the percentage with your own school's boundaries if they differ.

Can questions be worth different points?

This assumes equal-weight questions. For weighted marks, total the points earned and the points possible instead.

How do I round?

The score is shown to two decimals. Round to your school's rule, usually to the nearest whole percent.
