Pace, speed and what they mean

Pace is how long it takes you to cover one unit of distance, usually written as minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile. Speed is the same information flipped around: how much distance you cover in an hour. Runners plan almost everything by pace, because it is the number you can actually hold in your head and chase on a watch.

Two examples

Run 5 km in 25 minutes and your pace is 5:00 per km, which is 12 km/h or about 8:03 per mile. A clean, round benchmark that a lot of runners aim for.

Push to 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is still 5:00 per km. Pace does not change just because the distance doubled, which is exactly why it is such a useful planning number: hold the pace and the finish time follows.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

It depends entirely on your fitness and the distance. Beginners often start around 7 to 8 minutes per km, while trained runners hold well under 5. Compare yourself to your own past runs, not to strangers.

Does pace stay the same at any distance?

The maths does. Your body is another matter: holding a fast pace gets harder the longer you go, so race paces are usually slower than short-run paces.

How do I convert km pace to mile pace?

Multiply the per-km pace by about 1.609. The calculator shows both at once so you do not have to.

Can I use it for walking or cycling?

Yes. Any distance-over-time activity works, though the km/h and mph figures are the more natural read for cycling.
